National Healthcare Decisions Day Set for April 16
As April signals a welcome sign of spring, it is also a time to highlight National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) – designated as April 16. A key goal of NHDD is to demystify healthcare decision-making and encourage families and friends to discuss and document their wishes.
“I’ve seen great anguish among families who were left wondering, and even arguing over, whether they had made the right decisions. This doubt can lead to guilt and even intensify feelings of grief. Yet I’ve seen many families who, thankfully, knew what their loved one wanted, and who were given the peace of mind of being able to grant those final wishes,” shared Micheal Lalor, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Trellis Supportive Care.
“I’m pleased to share that our team at Trellis Supportive Care has been facilitating the advance care planning process for decades. It starts by having conversations about your wishes for care and choosing someone, known as your healthcare power of attorney, whom you trust to honor your wishes,” added Lalor. Once these important conversations are held and a trusted person has been selected, Trellis will help you document those wishes so that they can be shared with your loved ones and healthcare providers.
Because Trellis wants everyone to take this step, they offer several advance care planning workshops a month, free of charge. The workshops - known as Got Plans? workshops – are held virtually and in-person throughout the Piedmont/Triad area. Trellis offers this service as a gift to the community, and it can be your gift to your family.
